Sisal Cat Tree Posts: What Actually Determines How Long They Last

Two posts can look identical in a photo and behave completely differently in a home. The difference is winding tension and the core underneath it.

Why sisal, and where it fails

Sisal is used because its fibre is coarse enough to catch a claw and tough enough not to disintegrate. It fails in three ways: the winding loosens and gaps appear, the glue fails and the rope unwinds, or the core gives way and the post goes soft.

The four variables

VariableWeak versionWhat lasts
Winding tensionLoose, visible gaps between coilsTight, coils touching, no gaps at the top where claws pull
CoreCardboard tube, compresses under loadSolid wood or dense hardboard core
AdhesiveSpot-glued ends onlyFull-length adhesive, ends mechanically secured
End finishRaw cut, frays immediatelyCapped or bound ends

Post diameter and cat size

A post that is too thin forces the cat to wrap around it, which is awkward and shortens the scratching stroke. Around 8 to 9 cm suits most domestic cats; large breeds need 10 cm or more. This is one of the few specifications where bigger is unambiguously better.

Replaceable posts: the accessory that reduces returns

Posts wear out before the rest of the tree does. If the post is replaceable, the customer buys a part instead of a new tree — and writes a better review. Design the joint so the post unscrews or unbolts without tools that most households do not own.

What to ask a supplier

Density is usually quoted in grams per square metre of covering or in metres of rope per post. Ask for metres per post: it is the number that actually correlates with coverage and it is hard to fake.

FAQ

How long do sisal cat tree posts last?

It depends far more on winding tension and core density than on the cat. A tightly wound post on a solid core commonly outlasts a loosely wound post several times over, under the same cat.

Can you replace the sisal on a cat tree post?

On most trees, no — the rope is glued along its length. That is exactly why replaceable post designs exist, and why buyers should check before purchasing.

Is sisal better than carpet for scratching posts?

For scratching, yes. Sisal gives a claw something to catch; carpet lets the claw slide, which is why cats often ignore carpet-wrapped posts.

Posts and replacement post SKUs

We specify rope metres per post, core material and end finish on the quotation, and can supply replacement posts as a separate line.
